There’s Something About Sweetie/ Dimple and Rishi, Book 2 – Audiobook Online

In “There’s Something About Sweetie” by Sandhya Menon, the story revolves around the lives of two Indian-American teenagers, Sweetie and Rishi. Sweetie is a plus-sized girl who is reluctant to pursue a romantic relationship due to her insecurities, while Rishi, her cousin, is a hopeless romantic who dreams of finding the perfect partner.

The novel begins with Sweetie’s parents, who are desperate to find her a suitable partner, convincing her to move to India to participate in an arranged marriage. However, Sweetie refuses to participate in the arranged marriage and instead decides to pursue her dream of opening a bakery. Meanwhile, Rishi, who has recently returned from college, is determined to help Sweetie overcome her insecurities and find love.

As Sweetie and Rishi spend more time together, they form a strong bond and help each other grow. Sweetie learns to embrace her body and love herself, while Rishi realizes the importance of self-acceptance and the value of love beyond physical appearances.

Throughout the novel, the characters face various challenges, including family expectations, societal pressures, and their own insecurities. However, their resilience and determination ultimately lead them to find happiness and love in their own unique ways.

“I truly fell in love with this charming, funny, romantic and life-affirming book.” (Becky Albertalli, New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Leah on the Offbeat)

The irresistible companion novel to the New York Times bestseller When Dimple Met Rishi, about Rishi’s older brother, Ashish, and a confident, self-proclaimed fat athlete named Sweetie as they both discover what love means to them.

Ashish Patel didn’t know love could be so… unlucky. After being dumped by his ex-girlfriend, his mood turned GREAT. To make matters worse, his parents were annoyed and complacent, believing that they could find him someone more suitable. So, in a moment of weakness, Ash dared them to trap him.

The Patels insisted Ashish date an Indian-American girl – per contract. Under clause 1(a), he would go on dates on “fun” excursions like visiting the Hindu temple and his eccentric aunt Gita. Kill him now. How will this happen?

Sweetie Nair was many things: a formidable runner who could run faster than almost anyone in California, a loyal friend, a shower champion. Oh, and she’s also fat. For Sweetie’s traditional parents, this last detail is the kiss of death.

Sweetie loves her parents but she’s tired of being told she’s lacking because she’s fat. She decided it was time to launch the Sassy Sweetie Project, where she would show the world (and herself) what she was really up to.

Ashish and Sweetie both have something to prove. But with each date, they realize that there is an unexpected magic growing between them. Can they find their true selves without losing each other?

This is my favorite Sandhya Menon book to date! Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed her first two books, they were fun, cute romantic but – a bit forgettable. This time she dug a little deeper and I LOVED IT. It’s only been a day but I think There’s Something About Sweetie is something I’ll remember. Besides the adorable romance (as always) highlighted, we also take a close look at; body image issues (especially how they relate to Indian-American culture), mother-daughter relationships, getting over difficult breakups, and finding ways to love yourself regardless of what others think .

There are some incomplete passages that make the dialogue seem a bit cheesy or too forced. Especially when it comes to body positive conversations, they feel like they’re taken straight from a personal development book. However, those problems are quite small and easy to ignore. Overall, I thought this was a good, motivating story, and I had a blast seeing our main characters fall in love with each other – and themselves.
