This Is How We Fly By: Anna Meriano – Audiobook Online

This is How We Fly by Anna Meriano is a young adult novel that follows Ellen Lopez-Rourke, a grounded high school graduate, as she navigates family conflicts, friendships, and self-discovery through Quidditch. The book is divided into several sections based on different aspects of the story.

A loose take on Cinderella, about a girl who graduates from high school – after being grounded all summer – enters a local Quidditch tournament and finds her footing, perfect for Dumplin’ fans , Fangirls and everyone who has read and loves Harry Potter.

17-year-old vegan feminist Ellen Lopez-Rourke has one sweltering summer left in Houston before going to college. She plans to spend every last moment with her two best friends before they go to school on opposite ends of Texas. But when Ellen is grounded all summer by her (sometimes) cruel stepmother, all her plans are thrown out of whack.

Determined to do something with her time, Ellen (with the help of her BFF Melissa) convinces her parents to let her join the local Muggle Quidditch team. As a unisex game, Quidditch wasn’t quite what Ellen expected. There’s no flying, no magic, just a group of scrappy players holding PVC pipes between their legs and throwing dodgeballs. Suddenly Ellen is thrown into a very different world of sports: Her life is all about practicing, practicing, and jogging with a group of Harry Potter fans.

Even as Melissa retreats to pursue new relationships and their other BFF Xiumiao seems more interested in continuing high school (and from Ellen), Ellen is still slowly finding a place among the his teammates. Maybe Quidditch is where she belongs.

But with family life and friend troubles quickly spiraling out of control – Ellen must fight for the future she wants; now she’s playing for keeps.

Full of heart and humor, Anna Meriano’s YA debut is perfect for fans of Dumplin’ and Hot Dog Girl.

Ellen is biding her time in the heat of Houston’s summer until she goes to college. She and her friends went to different schools so they would spend every moment together. Until, that is, they couldn’t. Ellen is suddenly grounded all summer, and her carefree dreams are shattered. However, Ellen can find leniency in this situation by becoming a member of the regional Quidditch team. With all sorts of teenagers her age, the game was much more realistic than she had initially expected, and instead of riding magic brooms and beating bludgers, the game consisted of dodging balls and running around with PVC pipes. At least this is better than staring at the ceiling all summer, and her friend Melissa is on the team too. As Ellen becomes more involved with the group, her longtime high school friends grow increasingly distant, and her home life becomes increasingly negative and unacceptable. Can Ellen find the same magic for the rest of her life that she feels on the Quidditch field?

I enjoyed this coming-of-age story about finding your community, embracing new experiences, and realizing that sometimes the people we consider family or even friends aren’t always are the people who bring light and happiness into our lives. I’ve seen this book described as a retelling of Cinderella, and although there is an evil stepmother who gives Ellen a lot of grief, the rest of the story doesn’t support the idea. That’s a lot. Notably, and unlike Cinderella, there is no prince charming who comes to Ellen’s aid, and she is an unapologetic feminist who is not afraid to call people out on racism, homophobia character or social justice. Ellen is also fiercely protective of her sister and genuinely tries to be a good person when faced with unfortunate situations with her family and friends.
