This Shattered World/ Starbound, Book 2 – Audiobook Online

In This Shattered World, the second book in the Starbound trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, the story is set on the planet Avon, which is struggling with terraformation and under military control. The narrative follows Flynn, a member of the rebel group Fianna, who kidnaps Jubilee, a soldier, suspecting her involvement in a hidden facility that may be hindering Avon’s development. As they uncover secrets about the facility and its connection to LaRoux Industries, they realize there are deeper conspiracies at play. The story delves into themes of rebellion, loyalty, and the struggle for independence amidst a backdrop of war and deception.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is the captain of the force sent to Avon to destroy rebellious colonists on the terraformed planet, but she has her own reasons for hating the rebels.

Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. His sister died in the initial rebellion against the powerful corporation that ruled Avon with an iron fist. These corporations make a fortune by terraforming uninhabitable planets across the universe and recruiting colonists to make these planets habitable, with the promise of a life better for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate to gain any advantage over the military occupying his home, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: He returns to base with her as a prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the base together, trapped between the two sides in a pointless war.

Like the first book in the series, This Shattered World is a book that keeps urging me to read, to put my life on hold for a moment so I can immerse myself in this wonderful world. Probably closer to 4.5 stars, it’s not perfect, but it’s an incredibly fun deep dive into the universe featured in These Broken Stars. Those hoping for Tarver and Lilac’s story to continue may be disappointed to learn that this story does not focus on them but instead introduces two new characters who are destined to learn that the universe is not is all they believe in. Tarver has a good role in this story, and Lilac also appears beautifully, but this story focuses on Jubilee Chase, a top soldier serving on the harsh and dangerous planet of Avon, and Flynn Carmac, a rebel leader interested in peace. holds a tenuous hold on power over a rebel group that gradually feels that violence is necessary to gain the rights and privileges their people deserve. Flynn and Jubilee begin this story as bitter enemies, unable to see past their differing social roles. However, as the story progresses, they begin to see that behind the personalities driven by a world at war (or on the brink of war) are two real people with personalities, love and care for those around you. This is a war story that focuses on two people in need of peace.

This story has more action and obvious danger than These Broken Stars did. Where the first book in the series spent most of its time with just the two main characters traversing a (seemingly) lifeless planet, this story takes place amid a developing society. There are military, civilians, rebel fighters and families… and A LOT going on. Avon is a world just waiting for the spark that will light the fire that will lead to an all-out war. This creates a very different feel from the first story in the series. Everyone can be an enemy, and that makes the events in this book always seem a little unbalanced, keeping me reading.
