This Winter By: Alice Oseman – Audiobook Online

“This Winter” by Alice Oseman is a short story set in the Solitaire/Heartstopper universe, focusing on the Spring siblings – Tori, Charlie, and Oliver – during a challenging Christmas. The novella delves into Charlie’s struggles with mental health, particularly his recent stay in a psychiatric ward for his eating disorder. It explores how the family copes with these issues and the dynamics between the siblings. The narrative also touches on themes of support, understanding, and love amidst difficult circumstances.

I think this short novel is a great way to show us a little bit of each Spring child’s perspective. It’s nice to see Nick and Charlie celebrate the holidays more together. Charlie’s battle with mental health and his eating disorder are heavy focuses but so is Tori’s point that nothing is more important than supporting him even when she’s suffering . It’s fun to see each character develop their own thoughts and needs throughout the story.

For that reason, I went back and forth to see if Oliver’s part was really necessary to the story. Oliver’s is the shortest and hasn’t really given much since he was 8 years old. Still the sweetness and some pretty good advice for his mother made this episode worthwhile. Plus, it ends on a loving note, which is exactly who he is.

I’m glad it’s in the series but it’s definitely not a must-read. If you want to skip it, I think you can.
