Here are some comments from readers to better understand this good audiobooks:
01- This is the fourth book in the John Pearce series. In 1793, John Pearce and friends had just returned from a successful mission in Corsica. The siege of Toulon is escalating in violence and the Revolutionary Army is preparing to attack. Pearce tasked with escorting five thousand radical French sailors to a port on the Atlantic coast, where they needed to be released. The assignment did not go well.
Donachie brilliantly combines a gripping adventure with the intricate historical detail of the French Revolution, the Siege of Toulon, to explosive effect. If you like a good story about the British. Royal Navy set during the Napoleonic Wars then this is the book for you.
02- Donachie is a talented writer who can write a compelling story.. He built his stories with characters, vivid three-dimensional plot. There are elements of his storytelling that annoy me in historical contexts so much that I’d rather call those stories fantasy than historical.
03- I am interested in the naval history of this country and David Donachie faithfully portrays the cruel world of the ordinary soldier and the privileged conditions of the Officers. Also ship types from small Sloops to Line’s 100 gun ships. This is the background for an individual seeking justification for himself and his friends who have clearly been illegally impressed into R.N.
04- This is a historical novel about the sea, a pleasant surprise from an author I have never met before. The story is about the complicated content of the conflict between England and France at the time of the revolution. This is a good story with lots of action at sea and good coordination between senior British officers as they go around to protect themselves. A great read and you will love this fascinating book.
05- Donachie is a talented writer who writes a story that is compelling and holds the reader’s interest. He builds skepticism in his stories with vivid three-dimensional characters and plots. Elements of his storytelling annoyed me in the context of history calling those stories fantasy rather than history. It’s in the interest of history and modern sensibilities to instill in its protagonist the right modern liberal attitude on a pre-existing setting. The view that almost everything power related to the era’s globally dominant seafaring superpower was bad and that almost everything emanated from dominant power succeeded in overthrowing the yoke of monarchy is good, except for the part where absolute power is completely ruined no matter who it falls into.
