Best Audiobook 2020: Suttree By Cormac McCarthy
Suttree became famous instantly and was sold like hotcakes when the people came to know about the autobiographical nature of the novel.
Autobiographical elements can be found on several levels but the whole of the story is not about Cormac McCarthy’s personal life. A few of the incidents and some particular characters resemble real life-like things that Cormac observed in life. Suttree is an old man with no family with him, the man was married once but then his wife and son died after which he shifted to this new place. He was so sad about their death that he didn’t take part in the funeral; he went to the grave of his son when everybody was gone.
During this rather sluggish period of his life, Suttree met Harrogate who was in jail once because he tried to steal melons from a field. Now Harrogate tries to correct himself but he just cannot do this thing. The more he tries the more troubles arise for him out of his doings, the man uses strange devices to get the job done which lands him into trouble. At the end, same as Blood Meridian and The Road we don’t know whether the main character survived or not. Richard Poe narrates Suttree as a man who is going down in health because of his illness but there is no proper information about his death.
The audience is told only one thing that Suttree is ill because of severe viral disease. At the time of illness, the main character only has his dreams with him as no relatives or friends are present around him.
