Empire’s End: Aftermath (Star Wars) (Star Wars: The Aftermath Trilogy) by Chuck Wendig.

Chuck Wendig used to be the news source for writing advice… and then I read his SW novels. Unless his other works are much better – leapfrogging – I don’t know how this guy got to where he is.

I gave Aftermath 3 stars, followed by 1 star, and this… I could only get through the first half before giving up. I’m a huge fan of SW, so I really wanted to get over it, but life’s too short to write badly. The writing style is the most distracting I’ve ever come across, and it’s made worse because the story itself isn’t all that great or engaging.

To me, Wendig’s Star Wars novels read like they were written by a teen pop-culture-beating reporter who couldn’t help but combine the Star Wars universe with a some good old pop culture pleasures. All the cuteness that Wendig brings to his blog…

Unfortunately, it’s all there. The tone is completely off, some of the horribly executed “Earth lingo” and the immersion is broken, the choice to go with the present tense is so distracting, all the cute style he has. He carries in his writing both unresponsive, and it jumps around so it’s hard to really connect with the characters, most of them just “meh”.
