02- The Safehold Story is the story of survivors on an Earth that has been destroyed by an alien race. In this new planet, the aim is for Humanity to hide from the alien enemies for the time needed. The Safehold founders were divided on how this happened 1000 years later? The Safehold is locked in the technological level of 1800 and held there by a deeply ingrained Theological grip. An island nation that has proved too self-sufficient will be destroyed by the Church. Around this time, Merlin appeared and guided the nation through some very difficult times.

The series is about this expansive technological development and how the nation of Charis becomes free from the domination of the Church on the planet. The book is in a way with a lot of technical detail which Mr. Weber does very well and a bit of plot development but really sets the stage for an explosive sequel.

The civil war there began as a stalemate, with Church and Charis both sending men and materials to aid “their” side of the conflict. Charis can deploy new weapons to prevent the Church from starting to copy those weapons and other places. We’re getting hints about the Next Big Thing that good people have in the pipeline. The battles varied in scope and scale, with victories and defeats for both sides. The end result was that both sides were in the same position to plan for next year’s campaign and the next book in the Safehold series.
