Moonraker is the third novel in the James Bond series by author Ian Fleming.
Project Moonraker has a millionaire backer, war hero Sir Hugo Drax – a man who seems to cheat at the cards. A ballistic missile at stake, Sir Hugo’s presence could threaten Britain’s newest defenses. The James Bond of the movies, especially the early ones, is a hedonist who seems no doubt. The James Bond of the books is a more well-rounded character. He is suspected. He reacts to pain like a human, not a superman. He allows himself to be influenced by prejudice. He’s much more realistic, and he doesn’t necessarily get the girl.

Likewise, villains are more rounded, and therefore, more terrifying.

I’m researching my books and by far this is my favorite and least like the movie. We see Bond endure doubts, and real pain, both physically and mentally.

Hugo Drax is a villain in every way, he looks like a villain, he talks like a villain, and he acts like a villain, but not a villain. Hollywood’s villain, a caricature, he’s a villain you might meet, if you’re unlucky. What I like about the book is that it takes a deep look at the man’s character and shows how evil can be disguised so that someone as knowledgeable as Bond can be fooled.
