Naked Prey is the 14th novel in the Lucas Davenport series by author John Sandford.
In Naked Prey, John Sandford put Lucas Davenport through some changes. His former boss, Rose Marie Roux, moved up to the state level and took Lucas with him, giving him an exceptional troubleshooting job for cases that were too complicated or politically sensitive that he couldn’t find his way around. Others cannot handle. Lucas is now married and has a new father, both of which are fine with him: He doesn’t mind being a family man. For every little bit of peace you get, you pay – and he’s waiting for the bill.

It appears in the form of two people found hanging from a tree in the woods of northern Minnesota. What makes it particularly sensitive is the bodies of a black man and a white woman, and they’re naked. As Lucas begins to discover, the murders are, in fact, not what they seem, and they are not the end of the story.

When reading John Sandford – particularly the Prey series you become accustomed to excellence adn I felt this one fell a little short of his usual mark.
When two people are found hanging out in the wilds – a black manand a white woman – the media frenzie and shouts of ‘lynching’ send the politicians into a frenzy. Thats when Lucas and Del are sent in as ‘troubleshooters’ to sort it out. A very busy book, lots of snapshots of several characters – the majority of whom were not well filled out, even if they were involved up to their neck in everything! Inspite of this the book didn’t move at the same pace as his work usually does and didn’t have the same ‘edge’ (perhaps it’s coz Lucas is getting on a bit!). the introduction of Lettie, was however, a master stroke. She’s a superb character and hopefully we will hear much more about her in the future.

It was worth reading – but I can’t help thinking that was as much out of loyalty and character knowlege as anything else. If you haven’t read John Sandforb before, start with his earlier stuff, this will not give you the full impact of his usual work.
