Notes from the Field – Audiobook Online

Notes from the Field is a literary fiction book by author Anna Deavere Smith, Marcus Shelby.
Anna Deavere Smith’s extraordinary documentary theatrical form illuminates injustices by depicting real people who have experienced them.

“One of her most ambitious and powerful works yet on how race continues to divide and enslave the nation.”

Smith portrays a series of characters who lived and fought a system that pushed students of color out of classrooms and into prison. (As Smith put it: “Rich kids naughty, poor kids get sick and go to jail.”)

Smith describes Rev. Jamal Harrison Bryant, who delivered Freddie Gray’s eulogy; Niya Kenny, a high school student confronts a violent deputy; activist Bree Newsome, who lowered the Confederate flag from the grounds of the South Carolina State Building; and many others. Their voices are eloquent testimony to the great injustice of our time – and call us to action with their narrative of resistance and hope.

Very good book of the play of the same name. Thought-provoking and stays with you long after you’ve finished it. Kudos to this talented woman. Good job. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and publisher who provided the content of this book in response to my honest review. Receiving the book this way does not affect this review.
