A mysterious escape on an uncharted island sends them back to the source of their pain, and into the clutches of a demon intent on revenge.

Truly one of the better novels in the Drizzt epic; However, more than a small part of me wished that Salvatore had put real, irrevocable pain into this brief escalation of a story. While great passion comes from loss, the most recent great loss is nearly 3,000 pages (9 novels). It’s time for Salvatore to mature in his expectations for readers and incorporate more “real world” themes into this mystical realm.

Magic is wild and unpredictable, but Salvatore always keeps clear, firm boundaries. In doing so, the wonder of the world becomes more real and less like a writer’s miracle cure.
+ The battle scenes are epic and well written. Salvatore has clearly learned from experience; I no longer feel exhausted reading about long and varied conflicts.
– Drizzt’s “lessons learned” are impractical compared to what has been learned before. Personal growth isn’t always about. Growth can come simply by realizing the same lesson learned. It’s called maturity. Some even call it wisdom
