Review 1: Slaughter: Origin Story audiobook by Kindle Customer
Wait! This is a rookie author’s first book? Seriously?
This Beltz fella has got a spectacular career ahead of him if this is what he’s capable right out of the box. It’s a lot like a baseball player hitting a grand slam on his first at bat in the major leagues.
D.J. Slaughter is no cardboard action hero made from a thinly layered characterization strokes. Especially in the early chapters he feels like a real person you might know.
The way he is pulled into the story as a would be crime victim feels so real, like something you might read in the news.
The early action sequences are just breathtaking. Suspenseful, fast-paced, and oddly believable in an action hero sort of way. (Which means one you suspend disbelief, the action fits the story).
While I really like this book, it’s not perfect. The first third of the story is much stronger than the rest. Right around the the time D.J. is in the hospital, the blood really starts flowing. My “oddly believable” comment largely refers to the early stages.
I got the feeling that the author took a break somewhere along the way and when he picked it back up, he sort of lost his mono.
Consider these comments to be constructive criticism, I loved the book and can’t wait for the second volume.
Now, I hope Mr. Belts is busy writing.
Review 2: Slaughter: Origin Story audiobook by R. White
Love David John Slaughter! This amazing new hero is a refreshing character you get to know, bit by bit. He is complicated, smart, and a dedicated, loving, family man. But when his wife and 2 year old twin girls are brutally taken from him, he falls into deep depression and barely makes it through a suicide attempt. The gun wouldn’t fire! He becomes so obsessed with learning about guns, that he turns into a collector of high quality guns. But DJ (as he calls himself) doesn’t just collect them, he becomes very proficient with each type of weapon he owns. So, when a deal for a new set of guns goes bad, and a friend gets killed trying to help him, he leads the killers back to his box canyon ranch hoping to kill them there, after he gets to his own guns.
The action from here on through the book, is fast and furious. DJ has unwittingly killed the son of a ruthless, brutal Mob Kingpin.
You will love, cry, cheer, and fear, for this new hero. You won’t be able to help youself!
I have already started the next book in the series, and I’m hoping James Beltz writes a lot more books in this series!
Review 3: Slaughter: Origin Story audiobook by T.W. Barton
If you’re wondering if this book is worth your time then maybe this will answer your question. I bought the second book in the series as soon as I finished this one.
DJ is a bad, bad man and I mean that as a compliment.
DJ is trying to recover from a heart-wrenching tragedy. He’s moved to an isolated valley just trying to live his life. When a routine transaction turns into a bloodbath his quiet life is shattered for good.
The reference to Jack Reacher and Mitch Rapp in the book description is actually inaccurate. DJ is really a mix of the two. You have Reacher’s singular force of nature mixed with Rapp’s deadly intent and willingness to visit extreme violence on enemies.
The book was recommended to me so I really had no idea what I was getting into. I loved it. I’m always looking for books in this genre that can get my heart racing while making it impossible to put down.
