The Message To The Planet – Audiobook Online
“The Message to the Planet” is a novel by British author Iris Murdoch. The book follows the life of a scientist named Peter Rokeby, who is widely regarded as a genius and has achieved great fame and fortune as a result of his scientific breakthroughs. However, despite his success, Rokeby is haunted by a sense of emptiness and a lack of purpose in his life. He becomes obsessed with the idea of communicating a message to an alien civilization in a distant galaxy, hoping that such an act will give his life meaning. As Rokeby works on his project, he becomes increasingly disconnected from the people in his life, including his wife and children, and begins to behave in increasingly erratic ways. Meanwhile, his relationship with a young woman named Dora becomes increasingly complex and fraught with tension. Throughout the novel, Murdoch explores themes of science, spirituality, identity, and the human condition. In the end, Rokeby’s attempts to send a message to the aliens are unsuccessful, and he is forced to confront the emptiness he feels in his own life. The novel ends with a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty, leaving the reader to ponder the meaning of Rokeby’s life and the human search for purpose and connection.
The Message To The Planet – Audiobook Online By: Iris Murdoch
For many years, Alfred Ludens pursued the mathematician and philosopher Marcus Vallar in the belief that he possessed a profound metaphysical formula, a missing link of great significance to humanity.
Luden’s friends are more skeptical. Jack Sheerwater, the painter, thinks Marcus is crazy. Gildas herne, ex-preist, thinks he is the devil. Patrick Fenman, the poet, is dying thinking that Marcus has cursed him.
Marcus has disappeared and must be found. But he is a genius, a hero struggling with the limits of human knowledge. Is he seeking God, or is he just another victim of the Holocaust, which cast a dark shadow over him and the Ludens, both Jewish? Can human thought uncover the foundation of human consciousness? Iris Murdoch’s relentless creative imagination touches on a fundamental question of our time.
I first read this book many years ago when it was first published and I really enjoyed getting to know it. The professor, the friends, the artist with an unusual lifestyle, it’s all classic Murdoch and keeps you hooked from start to finish. The narrator doesn’t get in the way of the story without a shrill voice or a voice that doesn’t match your expectations.
Some people may think the title of this book is misleading. It is a work that comes after and equals “the sea, the sea” and the “green knight”. Many of her books deal with relationships that change dramatically when a protagonist changes. “Unicorn” is perhaps the book that shows this most clearly, but “Message to the Planet” develops this theme in a much more complex way. Also, in many of her books, a lot of people die. In some cases, it’s hard to believe the casualty rate. That is not the case in “message to the planet”. The book is a great example of Iris Murdoch.
