Based on the extraordinary life of Louise Erdrich’s grandfather, National Book Award-winning author who worked as a night watchman and waged a war against the expropriation of indigenous peoples from the countryside. North Dakota as far as Washington, D.C., this powerful novel explores themes of love and death with lightness and intrigue and unfolds with elegant prose, sly humor, and deep emotion of a master craftsman.

Thomas Wazhashk was the night watchman at the jewelry ring factory, the first factory located near Turtle Mountain Preserve in rural North Dakota. He is also a member of the Chippewa Council, who is trying to understand the consequences of a new “liberation” bill that is making its way to the US Congress. It was 1953, and he and the other council members knew that the bill was not about liberty; Congress is fed up with Indians. The bill was a “termination” that threatened Native Americans’ rights to their land and identity. How could the government give up its goodwill treaties with Native Americans “as long as the grass grows and the river flows”?

Since graduating from high school, Pixie Paranteau insisted on asking everyone to call her Patrice. Unlike most girls who book in advance, Patrice, the valedictorian of the class, doesn’t want to tire of her husband and children. She made jewelry bearings at the factory, a job that barely paid enough to support her mother and brother. Patrice’s shameful alcoholic father returns home from time to time to terrorize his wife and children and bully her for money. But Patrice needs every penny to follow her beloved sister, Vera, who has moved to the big city of Minneapolis. Vera may have disappeared; She has not been in contact for months and is rumored to have a baby. Determined to find Vera and her child, Patrice makes a fateful trip to Minnesota that exposes her to unexpected forms of exploitation and violence, while endangering her life.

Thomas and Patrice live in this impoverished conservation community with young boxer Chippewa Wood Mountain and his mother Juggie Blue, her niece and Patrice’s best friend Valentine, and Stack Barnes, teacher. white high school math teacher and boxing coach who is hopelessly in love with Patrice. .

In The Night Watch, Louise Erdrich creates a fictional world filled with memorable characters who are forced to grapple with the worst and best urges of human nature. Illuminating these characters’ love and lives, desires and ambitions with compassion, wit and intelligence, The Night’s Watch is a great work of fiction from this venerable cultural treasure.

Louise Erdrich is an incredible author. I think I’ll have to be her to write a review that can do this justice but I’ll try- I like Night Watch so much that I’m going to buy a copy so I can read it again, and to Can my dog hear the pages – there are many poignant and poetic moments in this book: “what did the bear dream about?” I will recommend this widely. Also this book is read by the author, and her voice is amazing.
