The Waters of Eternal Youth is the 25th novel in Donna Leon’s Commissario Brunetti Mysteries series. The story is about a teenage girl who fell into a canal late at night fifteen years ago. She couldn’t swim, she sank and began to drown and was survived by an alcoholic man nearby. She suffered incurable brain damage that left her in this state forever. The drunk man testified that he saw her being thrown into the canal by another man, but he didn’t remember anything.

At a fundraising dinner for a charity in Venice, a wealthy patron who is the girl’s grandmother wants Brunetti to investigate this complicated case.
With pity and fulfillment of a guilty old woman’s wish, Brunetti agrees to investigate and he realizes he cannot let the case rest.

This book deals with contemporary life in Venice, preserving history to the homes of African migrants and the haunting story of a woman trapped in a childhood.

01- This is a great book led by David Colacci. Main characters like Guido and Paola Brunetti and Guido’s unofficial assistant Signorina Elettra are amazing. The smart and beautiful Commissario Claudia Griffoni is from Sicily and has great depth. It is suspected that there was a bad game going on with Manuela. The story’s mystery, and Guido solves it not through investigation or intuition. All of Leon’s stories are rather slow-paced, taking plenty of time to impart her knowledge of Venice’s history and her love for the city.

02- This novel spends more time dealing with what is clearly not a crime, “just” a tragedy. The characters, setting and culture are always interesting, this story has a more intriguing mystery to it.

03- This is one of the good books worth reading. The book is like taking a short trip to Venice, immersing in local customs and cuisine.
