In this riveting thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author, a woman uncovers lifelong secrets as she searches for the truth behind her father’s involvement in a botched heist. .
Twenty years ago, in the dead of night, four seemingly random individuals pulled off the ultimate heist and nearly got away with half a million dollars. But by dawn, their plan had gone up in smoke. One of them is in the hospital. One person was in prison. One person died. And one person got away with it.
Arden Maxwell, the daughter of the man who disappeared years ago – presumably with the money after murdering his accomplice – has never accepted that her father abandoned her and her sister. After countless personal failures, she decides to return to her family home near the mysterious Caddo Lake and finally receive answers to the many questions that have been tormenting her. Little does she know, her father’s two accomplices – a war hero and a corrupt district attorney – are watching her every move.
Ledge Burnet, a rebellious teenager at the time of the burglary, avoided prison by enlisting in the army. Now he’s back in town to care for his ailing father – and keep an eye on the county’s corrupt district attorney, whom he suspects is the real killer. Even though both were forced to stay silent because of the crime they committed together, each still waited for years and hoped that the other would make a fatal mistake. But the arrival of their elusive accomplice’s daughter, Arden, who may know more about the missing money than she’s letting on, puts them both on red alert. She arouses Ledge’s determination to expose the DA’s betrayal…and arouses a desire he wants to deny.
Sandra Brown can absolutely read well! The characters are believable and real. And the plot is genius. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because the sex scenes were so detailed. Completely unnecessary, in my humble opinion. But the whodunit is nothing short of amazing. I thought I understood everything but I was wrong! The ending is interesting. I’m stunned! I read a lot and really appreciated the cleverness of this plot. If you’re a regular reader of this author, you know that her novels always have a real ending…no author gives this one a hard time – ever. But Sandra Brown outdid herself with this one! A great story recommended for mature readers.
