The story of this novel is set in 1942 where Europe remains in the unrelenting clasp of war. A young lady speaks her wedding vows while being just beyond the tents surrounding the Russian refugee camp that she uses to call home. Alina Dziak right from her age of nine years knew that she would go on to marry Thomas, who was her best friend. She is 15 now and engaged to the love of her life . But not bothered by the reports of the Nazi soldiers operating at the Polish border.

 She believed that there was no real threat at all. She dreams of the safe return of Thomas from his college in Warsaw, Poland so that they both could marry. But, little by little, the injustice of the Nazi occupation takes hold and everything changed in a matter of some time only.
