This light and cool memoir is filled with humorous remarks about France. The power of cheese in influencing elections, the right and wrong way for men to kiss and the law requiring blood donors to speak French. If you’ve ever dreamed of shifting gears and learning what the joys of living really are, you won’t want to miss this delightful book.

Can a dual profession couple really take stock and move to Provence? Keith and Val have a dream – to live in Provence, the land of glorious sunshine, charming hilltop villages and deep blue waters of the Mediterranean. But there are two problems: they don’t speak French, and they have full-time jobs. So they came up with a plan….

Follow their adventures (and mistakes) as they quit their jobs, become consultants, and split their time between the two countries. They built a life in Provence, gradually mastering a new language and befriending the locals over hearty meals and a little alcohol.

This is a series of anecdotes, written by an English-speaking American living in France. It is a short, easy to read book with the ability to smile, if not add a lot to one’s own understanding of the entente cordiale. The author’s joy in living is contagious, even if one is sometimes a bit confused as to why.
As the author himself points out, his and his wife’s struggles, no, actually his with a very different culture and language, give this book color.

Please note that the author claims to be anything but some bilingual Québécoise superhero. Van Sickle is an average, and often male, traveler who struggles with anything but a native lingo. Well, that’s the picture he painted. I suspect that he is, in fact, the type of person who brings enough of himself into any social situation to make up for those with little positive impact, regardless of the language being manipulated. He certainly has the confidence to point out his shortcomings to the reading audience, which will help draw people into his ‘swallows’.
