Slugfest – Inside the Epic, 50-Year Battle Between Marvel and DC, Auidobook Online By: Reed Tucker

The first in-depth, behind-the-scenes talk about the rivalry between the two comic giants.

They’re the two giants of the comic book industry – the Coke and Pepsi of superheroes – and for more than 50 years, Marvel and DC have been locked in an epic battle for spandex supremacy.

At stake is not just sales, but cultural fit and the hearts of millions of fans. For many parties, Marvel is currently at the top. But for much of the early 20th century, it was DC who was the undisputed leader, launching the American superhero genre with the 1938 publication of Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel’s Superman series. DC’s titles have sold millions of copies each year, and its iconic characters are familiar to most people in America. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman – DC has it all. And then in 1961, an upstart company suddenly appeared to defeat the mighty DC. With the publication of Fantastic Four, number one, Marvel changed the way superhero stories are done.

Writer-editor Stan Lee, artists Jack Kirby and Marvel’s talented bullhead then released a series of dazzling new works, including Avengers, Hulk, Spider-Man, X-Men and Iron Man. The rise of Marvel forever split the fandom into two opposing tribes. Suddenly, the most telling question you can ask a superhero lover becomes “Marvel or DC”?

Slugfest, the first audiobook to capture the history of this epic competition into a single, in-depth story, is the story of the company’s greatest competition ever told. Complete with interviews with big names in the industry, Slugfest reveals the arsenal of schemes the two companies have used in an attempt to outdo the competition, whether it’s stealing ideas , poaching employees, trapping spies or launching price wars. The feud never completely disappeared, and it simmers to this day. With DC and Marvel characters becoming multi-billion dollar global icons, the stakes are now higher than ever.

Really enjoyed this book. It’s well researched and the anecdotes really get you there in the historical context. However, it became clear quite early on that the writer was a fan of miracles. He is objective at times, but any discerning listener can tell which Company he admires more. Grant Morrison’s book on the same subject is much better managed to give an even rating. I absolutely LOVE the narrator.

I’m not a fan of comics but I work with someone like that and they got me interested in learning about the history of the battle between these two companies, this book is perfect for understanding that story. The rivalry, rivalry, domination back and forth are told in a compelling way. It seems that DC has never learned to seize opportunities and is still stuck in their old mindset.
