Poe Dameron has spent her life flying in spaceships, and his mother, a former Rebellion A-wing pilot, is happy to show her son everything she knows. When she dies at the wrong time, Poe is left with her father, Kes Dameron, who struggles with his own grief and does his best to keep Poe close and safe. But Poe wanted more than that. He wants to leave the sleepy moon Yavin IV and find adventure in the wider galaxy.

When a group of smugglers offers him a job controlling them out in the world, it seems like an opportunity Poe can’t turn down. And by the time he discovered the smugglers were actually part of a terrifying criminal enterprise called the Spice Runners of Kjimii, Poe was already deep in the water. His burgeoning friendship – and perhaps more – with a young spice runner-up, Zorii, further motivates Poe to stick around.

Poe Dameron is an unhappy teenager. He wants to follow in the adventurous footsteps of his long-lost mother, but his father disagrees with any of it. After a farce goes awry, the feisty Poe joins a notorious organization, the Spice Runners of Kijimi.

As an outcast and low-ranking member of the cell he joins, he finds friendship only in Zorii Wynn, another teenager, fully committed to the organization’s ideals. Together they gain experience and improve their rank through a number of quests.

Back in Yavin 4, his father works with Sela Trune, a talented but young investigator from the New Republic Security Bureau. She is building a lawsuit against the Kijimi organization and will do anything in her power to stop them. But will she be able to control her personal motives?

The raw action, plot, and plenty of betrayal make this a really interesting novel that will give us a better understanding of the trio’s Poe. Kudos to Alex Segura for his smooth writing and for weaving all the classic connections big and small with movies, TV series, novels and comics.

For those of you curious about Poe Dameron and a scene involving a certain character in The Rise of Skywalker, here’s a recount of their past adventures. Poe started out as a farm boy on the Yavin Four but got involved in a gang of smugglers and murderers with (and had) shady dealings. I enjoyed most of the book although it was a bit slow at first. But overall, this is a good book and provides a basic story about Poe Dameron and the planet Kijimi. If you’re not a fan of Poe Dameron, you might want to skip it. However, it already has the action for which it is counted. And that makes a book worthwhile.
