Ruinsong is a good book by author Julia Ember.
In a world where magic is sung, a powerful magician named Cadence was forced to torture his country’s disgraced aristocracy at the behest of a ruthless queen.

She reunites with her childhood friend, a noblewoman with ties to the underground rebellion, she must finally make a choice: Stand up to free their country from oppression or follow in her footsteps. queen and become a monster herself.

Ruinsong is fine. It’s a pretty enjoyable and quick read, and I certainly wasn’t angry when I read it… but the storytelling leaves some to be desired. We’re unfolding from one plot point to the next so fast that there’s no time to get to grips with the characters’ personalities, relationships, or histories. It feels more like being told the truth than watching a character grow and mature. I don’t think this book is ready to be published.

Most disappointingly… this book is not a retelling of The Phantom of the Opera. At best, I can say this is loosely inspired by Phantom — but even then, it’s missing some key plot points. Phantom is loved for the darkness, complexity, and vulnerability that is ultimately shared between Christine and Phantom. All of that is completely absent in this “retelling”.

I like this book. The film follows a powerful mage, Candence, who is forced by the queen to torture her kingdom until she meets her childhood friend and they try to find a way for Candence to defeat the queen. I thought the book was basic and wished there was more to the story. There is very little information about the world and I wish the author did a good job of building the world. I enjoyed the story but wish there was more to it. The pacing was good at the beginning but rushed at the end.

I enjoyed the characters in this book, both Candence and Kemi. I liked the way the author wrote the book in both their perspectives and I felt connected to these characters. Although I feel that the villain is a bit weak, I really like the queen. I thought the romance in this book was cute but I wanted more.
