The Poems of T. S. Eliot – Audiobook Online

The book “The Poems of T.S. Eliot” is a collection of poetry written by the renowned poet T.S. Eliot. Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4, this collection features a perceptive reading by Jeremy Irons, who brings to life the complexity and depth of Eliot’s poetry.

The major poems included in this collection span different periods of Eliot’s career and showcase his mastery of various themes and styles. One of the most notable poems is “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” which explores the inner thoughts and anxieties of its protagonist. Through vivid imagery and introspective musings, Eliot delves into themes of alienation, self-doubt, and the fear of aging.

Another significant poem in this collection is “The Waste Land,” which reflects the desolation and disillusionment that followed World War I. This poem is often regarded as one of the most influential works of modernist literature, as it incorporates multiple voices, fragmented narratives, and a wide range of cultural references. “The Waste Land” explores themes such as the decay of modern society, the loss of spirituality, and the search for meaning in a fragmented world.

“Ash-Wednesday” is another notable poem included in this collection, which focuses on Eliot’s spiritual journey and his struggle with faith. Written during a period of personal crisis, this poem reflects Eliot’s exploration of religious themes and his quest for redemption. Through rich symbolism and introspective reflections, Eliot grapples with questions of sin, salvation, and the possibility of transcendence.

Lastly, “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” adds a touch of charm to this collection. Originally written as a series of whimsical poems for Eliot’s godchildren, these verses showcase his playful side. The poems feature a variety of feline characters with distinct personalities and humorous antics.

Overall, “The Poems of T.S. Eliot” provides a comprehensive selection of Eliot’s poetry, ranging from his early works to his later reflections on spirituality and the human condition. Jeremy Irons’ perceptive reading brings these poems to life, allowing readers to delve into the intricate layers of meaning and emotion that characterize Eliot’s writing.

The Poems of T. S. Eliot

Originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4, Jeremy Irons’ perceptive reading unravels T. S. Eliot’s poetry in all its complexity. Key poems range from ‘J. Alfred Prufrock’s Love Song’ to the post-war desolation of ‘The Wasteland’ and the spiritual struggles of ‘Ash Wednesday’, to the enduring appeal of ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’.

The Spectator praised Jeremy Irons’ interpretation as “so accessible, reading Eliot as if finding his words for the first time, grappling with them, enjoying them, using them to express the emotions we all share when struggling to accept, realize, or let go”. Dame Eileen Atkins also appeared alongside Jeremy Irons in the ‘The Waste Land’ reading.

Both TS Eliot and Jeremy Irons are my favorite immortals, and their combination of talents is unmatched. Reflected in Irons’ brilliant, prismatic performance, Eliot’s abstract modernist verses shine through, and flooded with the light of Eliot’s verses, Irons is completely illuminated, alive and painfully lovely like a stained-glass window. I could not recommend this collection enough for anyone who is passionate about good poetry and fascinated by the magical, captivating performances of magical verses.

Jeremy Irons’ narration fits very well… the tone, tenor, and feel of T.S. Elliot’s poetry that I have listened to over and over again.
Yes, it takes a bit of life experience to enjoy Elliot and yes, he writes from his time and from his insights and passions, but much of good literature and poetry needs care and attention to digest….however, it’s still very good for the soul. Your life is richer when you spend time in the car, in the kitchen, in the garage, on a walk, or sitting in a good chair by the fire. I really recommend this audiobook. I have over 200 audio books and this one is in my top 10.

This is my favorite poem by T.S. Eliot and Jeremy Irons did a great job of narrating it. Narration is clearly important and I’ve added Irons to my favorites list, headed by Scott Brick.
