The Bird in the Bamboo Cage – Audiobook Online

Shortlisted for the Irish Book Award for Popular Fiction Book of the Year.

China, 1941.

With Japan declaring war on the Allies, Elspeth Kent’s future changed forever. When soldiers take control of the mission school where she teaches, comfortable security is replaced by rations, uncertainty, and fear.

Nancy Plummer, ten years old, has always felt safe at Chefoo School. Now enemies, separated indefinitely from worried parents, the children must turn to their teachers – especially Miss Kent and her new Patrol Guide girl – for help. help. But worse will come when students and teachers are sent to a remote internment camp. Difficulties beyond imagination, impossible and dangerous choices lie ahead.

Inspired by true events, this is the unforgettable story of the life-changing relationship formed between a young girl and her teacher, in a remote corner of a terrible war.

This is a large genus. I have to say that Hazel Gaynor is the right author for me. I’ve read 5 of her books and none is less than 4* for me. This book I read in 3 days. About a school where children in China were sent to internment camps when Japan invaded China during World War II. It focuses on some of the girls at this school who are also their Guides and teachers. We also saw them after the war at a reunion. It’s basically how they deal with the situation and give me that ‘Tenko’ feeling (80s TV series). I love it.
